CRIME TRENDS – ADVANCED BREAK-IN METHODS
It has become clear over recent years that more sophisticated methods of a break-in are on the increase. These trends have been spreading from the cities to smaller towns such as Knysna. Advanced trends in the area include:
- Disabling of the Alarm – When criminals gain entry by removing or breaking roof tiles to reach alarm wires in an attempt to disable signals.
- Cloaking – Where criminals enter the home using items to shield their heat signature from the standard passive infrared.
- Masking – Where criminals cover the standard passive infrared by moving an object in front to mask detection.
Albeit that the type of incidents using the above modus operandi does not occur frequently, we encourage our clients to reassess their home or business security needs from time to time by considering the following:
- Test your alarm & panic buttons regularly by contacting Allsound Security for a telephonic test or book a technician annually for a full system test.
- If you are informed of a power failure signal from your alarm, it is imperative that the power supply is checked and restored.
- Consider installing a Microwave PIR (2 detection capabilities) in the roof to detect movement before intruders can reach the alarm components.
- Consider adding additional advanced passives (3 element detection functions) to cover the alarm equipment as well as a room containing high-end valuables.
- Secure ladders, rubbish bins etc which burglars could use to elevate themselves onto rooftops.
- Ensure skylights are secured with one-way screws and anti-break window film.
- Trim trees which can be used as ladders to 2nd floors and windows.
In conclusion, bear in mind that criminals will constantly adapt and advance their methods so it is important to reassess your protection to minimise risk.
